The first two books I ever bought were Virgil E Brown’s book, The Path of the Mind, and his book, The Magic of Thinking. Both are great, but they do have a common theme in that they both talk about how our minds can be so easily lost to the way we think. Their books help me understand more and more about this issue, and I would highly recommend them to anyone.
I know I mentioned both books here before, but I don’t want to give much away, so I’ll just say that my favorite part of the Virgil E Browns book is the part about his younger sister, who was an extremely powerful mind-reader. She was born with only a few abilities, and she can read minds at a phenomenal level. The Magic of Thinking was a much more casual story that helped me learn how to think outside of that narrow frame of reference.
I feel like the book is a bit of a misnomer because the characters in the book are so young. I mean, I can understand that, because she is a younger sister, but she isnt a mind-reader. She has a limited number of powers, and even though she can read minds, her reading power seems to be limited. This book was a really fun read to me because of the way in which it tied in to the Magic of Thinking.
E Brown is one of my favorite authors. She has some of the best writing I have read, and I also read her first book, The Force of Will which I love just as much. I think that the fact that she has a child of sorts, a child who is in her care and is learning new skills, makes her writing even better. I also love how she takes a story from the future and makes it a little bit more personal.
I found it helpful to learn how Brown’s book was a bit different from her usual works. Even though I have no memory of the future, I do remember how Brown creates a world that I can really identify with. Even though I know what’s coming next, I still see myself in this world. I think the way that Brown uses a familiar story helps me remember this while reading, which helps me to follow the story and makes me feel like I’m a part of it.
